AGC of California Presents 2013 Safety Awards of Excellence

AGC of California recently honored California construction companies and individuals for their commitment to safety, handing out a variety of awards during the 26th Annual Construction Safety of Excellence Awards luncheon in Rancho Mirage on November 1, 2013. A record turnout totaling 150 company executives, safety professionals and AGC members gathered for the prestigious Safety Awards luncheon and presentations.

The program recognizes contractors and associated companies for their commitment to safe work practices through management commitment and employee involvement.

The awards were presented in various occupational categories, including Building, Heavy/Civil/Highway and Specialty, and were organized by the number of work hours covered and work completed the year prior. AGC also named several special category awards, including naming Steve Phillips, Hensel Phelps Construction Company, as the Harry Eckstein Safety Professional of the Year Award winner.

Richard Andrews, Zurich NA, served as keynote speaker for the AGC Safety Awards of Excellence luncheon. Andrews has over 40 years’ experience in the construction industry ranging from estimating, engineering, procurement and project management for owners and generation contractors on a wide range of project types, as well as extensive construction claims preparation, evaluation, prevention, defense, settlement and dispute resolution experience.

In his keynote discussion on how to achieve a zero incident culture, Andrews stressed the need for companies to have safety as a value within their organization and to pursue leading vs. lagging indicators in their approach towards safety. Just a few of the major ways that Andrews pointed out companies can put safety actively in the forefront are to have a near miss reporting project, involvement in safety at all levels of the company, a worker observation program, stop work authority, regular audits, and owners participating in safety orientations, among other things.

Additional speakers and awards presenters included AGC of California President Randy Douglas, Tierra Contracting, Inc.; Doug Stohlman, west regional manager of Zurich Services Corporation; 2013 Chair of the Safety & Health Council Gade Mobley, Flatiron West, Inc.; Rick Church, Aon Construction Services Group; and Roy Vlaovich, Jr., Granite Construction Company, who also served as Master of Ceremonies.
