In June 2021, Build California visited Sheldon High School in Elk Grove, one of Build California’s SMUD Shine partner schools. During this visit, Build California interacted with students to discuss their plans after high school and answer questions about how they can begin a career in construction. Organized by Building Trades Teacher, Jeff Merker, this was the first time in 31 years that the school hosted a three-week summer enrichment program where students attended simply to learn and not earn school credits. A total of 34 students participated and got to build a hand-crafted nightstand.
After spending 16 months of virtual learning and not using real tools, the opportunity for students to work in-person on woodshop projects was highly valuable. During Build California’s visit, students demonstrated a great interest in the building trades. One student expressed, “I didn’t know how much I liked building things until I started to build my guitar from scratch. I want to be some kind of engineer, or something that at least lets me build things.”
Build California aims to reach students and encourage them to pursue an exciting career in our dynamic industry. Being able to reach students at their schools, in their communities, and be in their space is a great way to do this. Sheldon High Instructor Jeff Merker warmly extends his appreciation to the AGC of California and its members for their continued support, resources, and expertise. If you would like to contribute to the Sheldon High School program, there is a great need for resources and materials such as lumber to continue student projects. Please contact Jeff Merker directly at (916)947-4902 or email@example.com.
