New Scholarship Available for Current and Prospective California Construction Safety Professionals

Scholarship to meet demand for maximum jobsite safety and health compliance during COVID-19

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Associated General Contractors of California (AGC) and AGC Construction Education Foundation (AGC-CEF), in partnership with construction technology provider, HammerTech, announced the launch of the AGC Safety Professional Scholarship program.

“Now more than ever, it’s critical to invest in the ongoing training and certification of safety professionals to ensure maximum jobsite safety and health compliance,” said Erin Volk, Vice President, Workforce & Community Development, AGC and Executive Director of the AGC-CEF. “We are grateful for the opportunity to provide California contractors a chance to improve and expand their safety acumen during a time when professional development and training budgets are reduced as companies work to stabilize their bottom line.”

The AGC Safety Professional Scholarship program launches during Safety Week 2020 as a timely solution for companies that provides current staff access to upward mobility during a difficult time for the industry and world at large. Valued at approximately $1,500 each, scholarships will be awarded to up to six individuals who work for AGC member companies who are either current safety professionals pursuing additional/advanced certification or current industry professionals looking to transition into a safety management career. All candidates must demonstrate intent to enroll in one of the Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) courses, meet the requirements of the specific BCSP program they are applying for, provide a breakdown of the BCSP course costs, submit a resume, and provide two letters of recommendation, one of which must be completed by a current supervisor and document that the employer will provide necessary support to the individual to ensure certification coursework is completed. Applications close October 30, 2020. Scholarship recipients to be announced December 1, 2020.

“As a part of the construction community, we want to work with member organizations like the AGC to positively impact our industry. Our commitment to improving construction safety starts with education,”  said Virginia Chere Lucett, Vice President, US Marketing, HammerTech, “In addition, we believe strongly that COVID-19 has disproportionately affected underserved and underrepresented communities and are prioritizing this scholarship to support members of those communities.”

Since the beginning of 2020, AGC has offered members access to numerous resources to help them navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. From submitting a letter to Governor Newsom securing construction’s essential status in March, to providing a critical and timely COVID-19 updates and resources, to hosting a Statewide Safety Stand Down on April 1, 2020 that inspired the nation, and more, AGC continues to fight on behalf of the future of California’s contractors. This scholarship is yet one more resource AGC is honored to offer members during the pandemic.
