Build California Ambassador Spotlight: Renee Williams

The Ambassador Program—now 159 members strong—is made up of industry professionals who are passionate about educating and supporting the next generation of California’s construction workforce. We recently caught up with Renee Williams, a West Coast Regional Business Manager at Manson Construction Co., to learn about her experience in the program.

As an Ambassador, Renee is committed to challenging common misconceptions about the construction industry. She strives to show students that construction offers creativity, innovation, technology, purpose, and a path to financial freedom. Growing up in Oakland and later working on a major project for the Port of Oakland, she saw firsthand the impact of local hiring and gained early exposure to the breadth and significance of the industry.

Build California’s reach wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our Ambassadors—industry professionals who show up, share their stories, and inspire the next generation of construction talent. By sharing their own career journeys, Ambassadors help motivate students and ensure Build California’s presence extends across the state.

We asked Renee a few questions about her experience both in the industry and as an Ambassador. Here’s what she had to say:

Build California: What is your unique construction story and how do you think it will help inspire students to join the industry?

Renee: I like to say I didn’t choose construction—construction chose me. More specifically, marine construction chose me. My first job out of college was with Pan Marine Construction, a diving construction company. About four years later, at just 25, I joined Manson Construction Co., another marine contractor. This time, the experience was broader and more hands-on. As the project administrator, I had the opportunity to work on a major project at the Port of Oakland, building wharves for the massive container cranes you see from the bay. I was invited to join the Port’s Social Justice Committee, representing contractors. It was eye-opening to see how committed they were to hiring locally and holding contractors accountable. I was exposed to the full scope of work and, more importantly, the wide range of trades involved.

Being from Oakland, I felt a strong urge to share this knowledge with my community—friends, family, and young people who might not have considered construction as a viable path. I talked about the possibilities, the pay, and the incredible infrastructure they could help build. Whether college-bound or not, the trades offer a pathway out of poverty and a means to achieve financial independence. That experience ignited my passion to spread the word about how awesome construction is and how to get started. I truly believe this industry can offer hope and opportunity to communities that have long been overlooked.

Build California: Why are you passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers?

Renee: I am passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers because, where I come from, there aren’t many examples of construction workers in our families or communities—no role models to look up to or be inspired by. Early in my career, I saw how little information was being shared about the opportunities in this field, the potential for success, and the steps needed to get started.

My drive comes from a desire to educate, inspire, and bring hope to communities that may have never believed financial independence and generational wealth were within reach. By sharing how to enter the industry and highlighting the wide range of trades available, I aspire to spark that hope. Because sometimes, hope for a better future is exactly what people need to take the first step.

Build California: What is your favorite part about being a Build California Ambassador?

Renee: My favorite part of being a Build California Ambassador is having the platform to connect with high school and pre-apprenticeship students and share just how exciting the world of construction can be. I especially enjoy introducing them to the unique field of marine construction—something many have never considered or even thought of. I get to talk about what it takes to succeed, from showing up prepared to developing a strong work ethic.

Most people think of construction as just commercial buildings or residential homes. But when I explain how waterways are maintained, how ports manage ship traffic, how bridges and piers are built, or how shorelines are reinforced, their curiosity is sparked. The best part? When students come up afterward wanting to learn more—that’s when I know I’ve made an impact.

Build California: Why do you think others should become Ambassadors?

Renee: If you find fulfillment in helping educate and inspire the next generation of construction professionals, becoming a Build California Ambassador is a powerful way to make a difference. It’s more than just sharing your story—it’s about engaging directly with students and pre-apprentices through mock interviews, hands-on demonstrations, career fairs, and speaking opportunities. You get to connect with real people who may have never considered construction as a career path, and open their eyes to the possibilities. It’s incredibly rewarding to be that spark of inspiration for someone’s future.
