ELSC Members Take on Legislative Day: A Gateway to Advocacy and Industry Engagement

Each year, AGC of California’s Legislative Day stands as a pivotal event, connecting construction professionals with policymakers to advocate for the industry’s future. For our Emerging Leaders Steering Committee (ELSC), this annual event is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s an opportunity to grow, network, and make an impact.

This year, two of our ELSC members, Ashley Lasiter and Melissa Bradway, shared their insights on why Legislative Day holds significance for them and how it shapes their leadership journey.

Stepping Into the Unknown: Ashley Lasiter’s Legislative Day Experience

For Ashley Lasiter from Granite Construction , attending Legislative Day was an unexpected yet transformative experience. Introduced to the event through the Emerging Leaders program , Ashley admits she wasn’t typically involved in politics and initially found the idea of meeting with legislators “overwhelming.” However, her curiosity led her to take a leap.

“I wanted to try something new,” she shared, reflecting on her first Legislative Day. Fast forward three years, Ashley now feels much more confident and prepared when attending. “I know what to expect, I understand the process better, and it’s been an excellent learning experience,” she said.

Beyond the educational aspect, Ashley also highlighted the invaluable networking opportunities Legislative Day provides. “It’s a great chance to meet other contractors, build relationships, and get your foot in the door with some important conversations,” she noted. Ashley encourages all emerging leaders to participate, calling it a “truly eye-opening experience that pushed me to grow both professionally and personally.”

Using Her Voice: Melissa Bradway’s Drive to Engage

For Melissa Bradway from Rex Moore, the decision to attend Legislative Day stemmed from her desire to be “in the know” when it comes to the construction industry’s evolving landscape. “I like utilizing my voice,” Melissa explained. Her passion for being an informed and active participant in the industry fuels her engagement.

Melissa also sees Legislative Day as an opportunity to be more hands-on in shaping the future of construction. “It’s not just about attending meetings; it’s about understanding what’s happening at the legislative level, asking questions, and being part of the conversation,” she shared.

Building a Future-Ready Industry

The insights from Ashley and Melissa underscore the importance of Legislative Day as more than just a political event—it’s a powerful tool for emerging leaders to connect, learn, and actively shape the future of construction in California. By stepping into the halls of the State Capitol, our ELSC members are not only advocating for their businesses and colleagues but also laying the groundwork for an industry that reflects their values and vision.

As we look ahead, AGC of California remains committed to supporting emerging leaders like Ashley and Melissa as they step up, speak out, and lead the way for our industry’s continued growth and success.
