AGC of California members received an important update this month on Fresno County’s Better Roads, Safe Streets transportation initiative, a major capital program originally expected to move toward a 2026 ballot run. The Fresno County Board of Supervisors has paused advancement of the measure while it completes a comprehensive economic impact assessment. FCTA’s assessment is evaluating several factors that directly affect project delivery, including revenue modeling, inflation and construction cost escalation, goods‑movement growth, long‑term maintenance obligations, and voter sensitivity to tax measures. This analysis will ultimately shape the tax structure, project list, and timing of the initiative – key details contractors rely on when planning workforce, equipment, and long‑range capacity.
The Better Roads, Safe Streets program is expected to fund a wide range of capital work across Fresno County, including countywide roadway rehabilitation, major corridor improvements on SR‑41, SR‑99, and SR‑180, transit modernization, goods‑movement infrastructure supporting agriculture and logistics, school‑area safety upgrades, and local street maintenance allocations for cities and the county. These scopes represent substantial opportunities for heavy civil contractors, paving firms, bridge specialists, and transit‑focused subcontractors.
