The prestigious 2020 Specialty Over $10 Million Constructor Award was presented to ACCO Engineered Systems for their work on the Great Park Ice & Sport Complex. The Great Park Ice and Sports Complex is part of a public-private partnership with the Irvine Ice Foundation and the City of Irvine. Featuring four indoor ice rinks, the 280,000-square-foot ice and sports facility serves as the new training facility for the Anaheim Ducks NHL team and is home to USA Figure Skating and recreational leagues. It includes a training facility, offices, guest concessions and dining.
Swinerton Builders was general contractor for the project, while ACCO Engineered Systems completed the mechanical and plumbing scope on a contract that included both plan and spec and design-build portions. This approach capitalized on the efficiencies and cost savings of combining the two project scopes.
The team uncovered substantial cost savings opportunities early on. During design of the training facility and office, ACCO identified mechanical system adjustments that captured cost reductions of approximately $800,000 – all while maintaining system performance goals.
The team made efforts to optimize space usage and speed up the fabrication process in order meet the project’s ambitious schedule. They employed creative scheduling techniques to overcome unanticipated delays. Ultimately, ACCO played a pivotal role helping deliver this important, much-anticipated new facility to the owner and the local community.
