Build California Ambassador Spotlight: Angel Jones

With 138 members and growing, the Build California Ambassador Program is made up of industry professionals who are passionate about inspiring and supporting the next generation of California’s construction workforce. We recently caught up with Angel Jones, Director of Business Development at J-Squared General Contractors Inc., to learn more about her experience in the program. Angel recently spent a week at the Build California Summer Camp in Southern California in a duo role as ambassador and counselor and remembers thinking, “Where was this when I was growing up?”

Build California’s reach wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our incredible Ambassadors—industry professionals who show up, share their stories, and inspire the next generation of construction talent.

For Angel Jones, Director of Business Development at J-Squared General Contractors Inc. and our Ambassador of the Quarter, that story is all about possibility. With a background in television and zero construction experience, Angel’s journey into the trades is unexpected, but powerful. She’s living proof that it’s never too late to pivot, learn something new, and build a career you love.

As part of the Build California Ambassador Program, now 138 members strong, Angel has made it her mission to show students that the path to success isn’t one-size-fits-all. We caught up with her to learn more about her experience in the industry and what being an Ambassador means to her.

Build California: What is your unique construction story and how do you think it will help inspire students to join the industry?

Angel: I’m not sure my story is unique, but it’s definitely unexpected! I came into construction with zero experience. My background was 25 years in entertainment, hosting television shows, working in media, and being part of a totally different world. So, when I stepped into this industry, hard hats and job walks were brand new to me.

Oh, and I didn’t go to college. So, part of my mission is to show students that success doesn’t always follow a traditional path. You don’t always need a degree to make a difference. You need drive, curiosity, and the courage to start.

But here’s the magic: construction, like entertainment, is all about people. It’s about building relationships, earning trust, and showing up authentically. I leaned into what I did know: how to connect with others, how to communicate, how to stay curious, and that gave me a head start in my own way.

My company, J Squared GC, gave me the creative freedom to shape this role. I wasn’t boxed in by “how it’s always been done.” Because I came in with fresh eyes and no preconceived notions, I was able to approach networking and business development with a totally different lens and it’s led to some incredible deals and meaningful connections.

I think students should know you don’t have to follow a traditional path to make an impact. Sometimes, the best thing you can bring to the table is you—your perspective, your skills, your story. This industry has room for all kinds of talent, especially when you use your strengths in new, unexpected ways. And truthfully, construction isn’t just about buildings. It’s about building people, careers, communities, and a better future.

Build California: Why are you passionate about supporting the next generation of construction workers?

Angel: Empowering and inspiring others is my purpose, plain and simple. I’m especially passionate about showing people that it’s never too late to pivot, to grow, or to chase something new. You’re never too old, too inexperienced, or too unsure to learn a new skill, try a different path, or even start an entirely new career.

There was a time when I didn’t know where to turn or who to talk to. That stuck with me. I made a promise to myself to be the person I needed back then. Be a sounding board, a cheerleader, a connector, a guide.

I truly believe we’re all walking billboards for what we stand for. And I want to be the one wearing the sign that says, “You’ve got this. The future is wide open.”

So, if I can help someone who’s feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or stuck to see even a glimmer of what’s possible, then I’ve done my job. Because the truth is: you can be anything you want to be—the only limits are the ones you put on yourself.

Build California: What is your favorite part about being a Build California Ambassador?

Honestly, it’s the people. The team behind Build California is passionate, creative, and just plain fun to work with. The events are next level: engaging, innovative, and filled with energy. But the best part? Watching students light up when they realize the possibilities within the construction industry. That moment when their perspective shifts is magic.

I’ve spoken at schools, attended job fairs, and connected with hundreds of students, but the AGC Build California Summer Camp was a standout. The students were given free PPE, hands-on training, real mentorship—and I remember thinking, “Where was this when I was growing up?!” I was genuinely jealous. I even found myself learning right alongside the kids, which made the experience even more special.

What I love most about being an Ambassador is being able to plant the seed that change is powerful. Growth doesn’t stop when school ends. If you’re open, curious, and willing to learn, the construction industry can offer more opportunities than you ever imagined.

Helping students realize they do have options, and seeing them get excited about their future, that’s what fuels me.

Build California: Why do you think others should become Ambassadors?

When I started in this industry, I didn’t know a single soul. No network, no connections. I was brand new. Becoming an Ambassador was a smart way for me to build meaningful relationships, grow my network, and give back to the community all at the same time.

If you have a heart for service, this is where you’ll find your people. You’ll connect with others who care not just about their careers but about making a real impact. And let’s be honest: your network often becomes your net worth. The more like-minded, purpose-driven people you meet, the stronger your foundation becomes, both professionally and personally.

Being an Ambassador means investing in the future and investing in yourself. You never know where people will end up or how paths might cross again. Construction is a relationship-driven industry, so why not build those connections in a way that’s intentional, meaningful, and community-focused?
