The Build California team is back on the road visiting young people from across the state to share with them the exciting opportunities the construction industry has to offer and where to begin their exploration journey!

Most recently, Build California visited 65 students in the Industrial Technologies program at Sheldon High School in Elk Grove. The presentation, delivered by Build California Coordinator, Katie Dunn, featured topics including:

  1. Debunking the misperceptions young people have about the construction industry;
  2. An introduction to the new Build California e-cademy, a virtual playground to explore and learn about construction through interactive, dynamic, and immersive lessons and digital experiences; and,
  3. Different career pathways in the industry.

Following the presentation was a Q&A session, where students asked questions about the application process for apprenticeships, how to find a training center near them, and where to begin their careers in the industry.

After the presentation, students shared with the Build California team their recent projects and lessons, which included building tiny homes for the homeless, learning framing skills like how to use nail guns, (more?) and the importance of deadlines. The Industrial Technologies Program Director, Jeff Merker, has created a program to inspire and educate the students and instill confidence in them that will help them in all areas of their lives.

On October 26th, the Build California team also participated in a Trades Day event put on by The Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF), formerly known as SRBX Education Foundation, at Cal Expo in Sacramento. With roughly 200 students in attendance, the Build California booth was a big hit, and the team was able to meet with many students and get 80 students signed up for Build California’s website and email distributions.

It was an excellent opportunity to get face time with students, educate them on the different pathways to begin their career in the construction industry, and share the various resources Build California offers.
