Transgender Day of Visibility: Best Practices for an Inclusive Workplace

Happy #TransgenderDayOfVisibility!

AGC of California stands with the transgender and nonbinary community on Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), and every day. TDOV acknowledges and celebrates contributions and accomplishments made by people within the transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse communities. We are taking the steps to learn and improve, and we encourage our employees and members to bring their full authentic selves to work every single day.

Did you know that there are more than 1.4 million people who identify as transgender in the United States? This number is only increasing as conversations and education on this topic continue to spread, and people learn more about gender identity and expression. It’s also important to note that studies show that about 16% of Generation Z identify as LGBTQI+ (that T stands for Trans!).

As companies and organizations, how can we start to look inward and assess how our policies and culture ensure our current and future trans employees feel protected and like they belong? Out & Equal has shared some key workplace policies and practices that allow for continuous learning, evaluation, and improvement within companies. There’s no better way to attain and retain a workforce than building an inclusive policy and culture.

Key workplace policies and practices:

  1. Establish and enforce non-discrimination policies.
  2. Provide inclusive healthcare coverage.
  3. Offer gender-neutral facilities.
  4. Collect LGBTQI+ employee data through optional self-identification.
  5. Share gender transition guidelines to best support transitioning employees.
  6. Encourage and share trans-inclusive employee resource groups.

Please visit Out & Equal to learn more about how companies can implement these policies and continue this conversation year-round.
