RE: California’s Response to President Biden’s Gas Tax Suspension

Dear Governor Newsom,

On behalf of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of California and our members, and in response to President Biden’s recent proposal, we urge you to refrain from suspending the state gas tax.

AGC of California is a member-driven organization that consists of over 900 companies statewide. Our members are both small and large subcontractors, general contractors and construction management firms that provide commercial construction services on a broad range of projects across the state of California. We pride ourselves in being the voice of the construction industry with the goal of providing long-term, sustainable growth to the industry and our members.

AGC of California urges you to not take action to suspend California’s gas tax which will further diminish our already under-maintained existing infrastructure and delay urgently needed, new transportation infrastructure improvements. We are already behind. In his 2022 State of the Union Address, President Biden acknowledged, “Now, our infrastructure is ranked 13th in the world. We won’t be able to compete for the jobs of the 21st century if we don’t fix that.”

Suspension of California’s gas tax would have major economic consequences on hard-working, blue-collar Californians’ ability to work. AGC of California prides itself on building long-lasting relationships with our state leaders. We would appreciate further collaboration as we work through these unprecedented times.

Sincerely,

Peter Tateishi
Chief Executive Officer
