Why train your employees in trench shoring, and excavations?

There are few tasks as dangerous as trenching and excavation. In addition to OSHA’s language making training your employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions mandatory [CFR 1926.21(b)(2)}, your employees may be exposed to all four of the focus four categories: struck by, caught between, falls, and electrocution.

A competent person is a person who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions that are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees. The competent person has the authority to impose prompt corrective measures to eliminate these hazards.  The competent person training will provide more in depth material that that of Basic Awareness Training.  Once competent person training has been completed it will be up to each employer determined the competent person designation at each of their job-sites.  Although, an individual has completed the training, further demonstration to the employer may be needed in order to show they are capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards.  The employer is to make sure the competent person has authority to impose prompt corrective measures to eliminate the hazards.  AGC of California Competent Person Training does not give authority, each employer may do so following the participation of training.

By educating your employees on the dangers you can significantly reduce the risk, as well as help your employees learn what is expected, help them build good habits, and learn to incorporate those actions into their daily operations.

Properly trained employees result in reduced costs for implementation and better planning to facilitate compliance with Cal/OSHA 1541, and Fed OSHA 1926 Subpart P.
